Emilie Gray is one of my favourite photographers and Newbattle Abbey is a truly stunning location. So it was only natural that I would combine them sooner or later.

Set within 900 years of Scottish history, Newbattle Abbey is a place where the past lingers in every corridor. Once a Cistercian monastery, then a family seat, its Italian gardens and ancient woodland unfold around a house of ornate ceilings, oak staircases, and a hushed, atmospheric crypt. It is grandeur softened by time, the kind of setting that asks for intimacy rather than spectacle.

For this shoot, we wanted to capture that quiet drama: a celebration that feels as though it has always belonged here. It is romance and elegance that has earned its weight in gold.
